The weather might be a little cloudy at Huawni today, but our summer camp activities have been anything but dull and grey! Activities were in full swing with campers having fun from the O.C. all of the way over to canoes! Campers were in for a surprise when they returned to canoes this year- it has had a makeover since they left last summer! With new canoes, paddles, and buoys in the water, campers now get to learn the different canoe strokes as well as how to handle the boat in and out of water. Once campers learn the basics, like which end is the bow and how to use a J-stroke while paddling, they can become certified in Huawni canoes! The more campers learn, the more fun canoes can be. As campers master certain skills they get to play games such as canoes capture the flag and even an inter-canoe water balloon fight!

Lots of campers are already excited to show off their canoeing skills tonight when camp heads to the Initiation Pond for fishing! As a counselor, it is awesome to watch kids master new skills that not only make activities fun but can also help them in real life. Activities like canoes and archery teach campers skills that are valuable both here and away from camp, and they are also a great way for campers to find something they enjoy and can work hard to excel at. I can’t wait to spend these next few weeks helping campers learn new skills and have fun doing it!
