The Watlington Family opened up their home in Center, TX with a lot of Huawni kids camp flavor! We were greeted with some amazing Log H midnight snacks, the old school Break Room was re-opened for some good old Coke in a plastic cup, and host and Director Emeritus, Chris Watlington, share about why Camp is an essential part to your child’s growing up.

Here’s what Chris had to say to our future camp parents:

“Kids camp at Huawni is a good experience, but here’s why. I’m a parent now, so I understand. I don’t know if my kid is ready to go be without me for a week….exactly. I don’t know if he or she doesn’t have any friends going…..that’s the point. I don’t know…I text and have to be in contact all the time….no you don’t. But I don’t know if I’m ready….you are. Those are the things that make Camp Huawni special. Did you notice that there were no video games or text machines in any of the video? We closed that down. They have to make friends, and they do! They have to be independent…they’re ready. Your camper, when he or she comes back, parents, will be different after a week or two and they’re better, because they’ve grown, and that growth is sometimes difficult and painful when you say bye to them, but MAN..they’re in a place where a treat, like a cookie or soft drink, is really a treat! Did you see how excited they were about ice cream? It’s because they don’t have 14 an hour. It’s all about good, old fashion fun. I remember my first time home after kids camp. I finished dinner, picked up my plate and put everything in the garbage like we do at camp, and rinsed my plate off, and my mother broke into tears! She’d never seen me do that before. For all the fun reasons, campers, and for all the more profound reasons, parents, it’s the place to be. I just don’t know if they’re ready to go without me?? EXACTLY!”

Back in the 1980’s we served cokes out of the Break Room at break. Today, we go 100% Gatorade for hydration!
