Yesterday we welcomed a record 157 campers. Before supper campers were amped up to start our first two-week session of the summer. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to see many of you yesterday during Opening Day. I hated that I didn’t get to see everyone; know that I hope to hear from you at some point over the session, maybe even through a blog reply (below) or email.

I appreciate everyone’s feedback yesterday on the check-in process. It seems like it was a bit smoother than last year; we still have a few kinks to work out, but I hope your experience overall was a pleasant one. For those who didn’t give feedback, feel free to post to this blog below so that we can do even better next time.

The Mayfield Family won one of our giveaways for the most decorated car. Loved the golden pine cones!

The Matneys stopped for a snapshot at Pine Bottom.

I love Session 2. Looking over the cabin rosters yesterday, I realized just how special this session is. We have a whole new crop of youngsters whose parents attended Huawni. We also have campers who discovered Huawni through a friend or online search….I’m excited for them to get their first taste of sleepaway camp.

Hunt and Bear hope to be in the same cabin in 2020!

Last night we hosted the famous, famous, MOST FAMOUS Opening Night Show. Director Emeritus Chris Watlington directed a spin off of Freaky Friday; campers (played by counselors) and counselors (played by counselors) were switched by the aliens from camper to counselor and counselor to camper. This is one of our funnier Opening Night Shows, and our staff sold out to make sure the kids enjoyed the show.

Campers get a kick out of Opening Night Show.

Allyson, Sam, Kelsey, Tommy, and Christian are upset because they were changed from campers to counselors by the aliens during Opening Night Show.

Campers headed to their cabins after Opening Night Show for their first cabin time. Cabin Time on the first night of camp is a big one. Counselors lay out all the boundaries and expectations for the session. They also brainstorm with campers their cabin’s bucket list (i.e. things campers want to do that are extra special). Cabins are rewarded for good behavior and unity by their counselors with bucket list experiences as the session moves along.

This morning we had our first Flag Raising. Flag Raising is how we start each day. We say the Pledge of Allegiance and then cabins voluntarily serenade camp atop Flagpole Hill . Today we’re supposed to get our brand new, 30 foot, industrial-sized flagpole installed; I can’t wait to get pictures of the new flagpole once it’s up. Thank you to our alumni who donated the funds for this most needed upgrade!

Today is our first full day of activities. All of our water activities will be open, along with one that we just added, Flag Football. We’ll play Capture the Flag tonight on the Front Yard, and I’m sure our crazy counselors will be dressed to the tee.

Don’t forget to subscribe to this blog; there’s a link mid-way down on our NEWS/Blog page that says “Subscribe via email”. Click this link and you’ll automatically get an email when I post new blogs.

Also, I’m super excited to announce that we now have a responsive website for your phones! Many of you may be wondering what this means. Essentially, when you pull up our website on your phone, it is much simpler and easier to navigate. It’s also much easier to login to your CampInTouch Account to see daily camper pictures. I’d like to thank Nicolai Ronnigen and his web team for getting this up. They do an amazing job every day making sure our website is up and working well. Thank you Team Ronnigen!

From your phone, click the menu icon and scroll down to login to see daily pictures.

We Want To Hear From You Parents….Reply

And finally, I want to hear from you parents!! Please post comments below on any/all of these blogs (see below) where it says “What are you gonna say?”. In particular, I’d love to hear from you parents that dropped off your child for the first time. How did you feel? What do you hope for your child to experience this session?
