Last night we finally got a chance to hike over to the Initiation Pond (aka iPond) for cane pole fishing, a campfire, s’mores, story telling, and a sing song. Again we had sunshine all evening until the sun set and a crescent moon came up. It was beautiful evening. Fishing is such a simple activity, but one the campers look forward to every year. It’s such a comfortable setting; even if campers don’t fish they’re throwing the frisbee or football, talking with their favorite counselor, or sometimes just goofing around with their friends. After roasting marshmallows, I had all of camp take a seat for the telling of the Asia Jones story. This story dates all the way back to Daddy Earl (my grandfather), when he was little boy (likely around 1920). The kids listened intently; it was neat to see how kids still enjoy the tradition of storytelling. Then we hosted a sing song. We sang You Are My Sunshine, Froggy Went A Courtin’, Wagon Wheel, Shelby County Breeze, Red House, Salty Dog, Mandi’s Song, Now and Forever, and the Camp Song.’
This morning was just another normal Flag Raising…or was it?? After raising the flag, we had special music by our campers, and then we requested that the campers do hoover (quite a few water balloons have burst in the last two days). This, of course, was a ploy to get campers close to the swimming pool. As camper got closer to the pull, we blasted our Playday theme song, Chicken Train, as counselors began to throw kids, all be it safely, in the pool. This is how we traditionally start what we call Playday, a day full of fun, silly games for girls camp and Huawni Uprising for boys camp. They’ll both compete this morning and have regular activities in the afternoon.
Tonight we’ll host the Talent Show; it’s a night for pure encouragement. I can’t wait to see our campers bring out the talent.
I hope to post some more pics from Playday. Camp is going well…this week is really picking up as Playday starts.
Again, I want to remind you alumni parents that we’re inducting alumni parents into Tribal Comp tribes tomorrow night. If interested, please email me by 5pm today.
Sincerely,
Travis
