Last evening we had two epic match ups in the second round of the Wiffleball World Series (WWS) here at Camp Huawni. In the first round, Caddo younger took one game 10-0 while Tejas older took game two 6-0. So, last night both teams squared away from two more final games. If the teams tied with two wins a piece, the team with the most total runs would take the championship.
Both fields were really decorated up and we had full on announcers and pa systems to do play by play and music in between innings. This was a tradition started by former director Chris Watlington, and this little added feature, and hearing your name announced, added just the right touch to our WWW finale.
In last night’s older division game, Tejas got off to a 2-1. But then in the 3rd inning, Caddo older battled back scoring two more runs, making it 3-2. Then starting in the 5th, the floodgates opened as Caddo tacked on 4 more. Caddo older won their game by a final of 7-2 over Tejas.
In the younger division game, it was a must win for Tejas. Further, they would have to win by a total of 10 points. Tejas younger jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Bother pitchers, David G. for Caddo and Madded P. for Tejas, pitched stellar games. Then in the 5th, Tejas tacked on 3 more runs, making it 5-0. Caddo fought back valiantly by adding 3 runs in the top of the 6th. In the end, it wasn’t enough, as Tejas younger won 5-3.
Because both teams won two games each, it came down to total runs, and in the end, Caddo won by outscoring Tejas 20-13. So, Caddo won WWS!
Today (Wednesday) marks all day Tribal Competition. This morning Caddo and Tejas faced off in three team events, Soccer Kick Around the Pool, Hot Shot, and the OC Team Run (Obstacle Course), my personal favorite. Caddo swept the morning events, winning all three!
This afternoon campers are currently competing in the Innertube Relay at the pool. After that, they’ll head to the Critter Pond for the Huawni Derby. The Derby is a relay race around the Critter Pond with three legs— short run, long run, and swim, which consists of swimming the width of the Critter Pond. And finally, campers finish with competing in the Run for the Roses, a massive relay run race across the entire campus. After supper, we’ll grind it out with a Tug-O-War, and then finish the night with a slip-n-slide on Flagpole Hill and snow cones.
It’s hard to believe we’ve only got 3 days left of Camp!! We’ll keep you posted!
