Welcome all of our Session 2 Huawni Families! Yesterday was especially enjoyable and smooth, and I really enjoyed talking with all our families. It seemed like our new check in process went better. Thank you for being flexible and patient!

As I spoke with a handful of our Huawni Parents, I was reminded of how Huawni has truly become a family legacy of youth development. Many of you came to camp long ago. It was heart warming to see the excitement on your faces as you could almost feel the Huawni Magic being past on to another generation. Also, I got to observe new Huawni legacies beginning as some of you dropped of your children for the very first time for sleepaway camp.

Following Opening Day we gathered in the Dining Hall for Ms. Ada’s famous, famous, most famous fried chicken. We followed with Opening Night Show, which was full of counselor skits, improv, and random camper competitions. By the time campers got settled into their cabins last night, camp was underway and all was right in the world again.

Thank you for sharing your child with us these next two weeks. 14 days is oddly the equivalent of a full year of memories, special moments, and life lessons as your child will begin to learn who they truly are out here in the piney woods. I hope you enjoy this blog as your camper is here at Camp. Be sure and post comments below where it says What are you gonna say?.

Homesickness

For many of you, it was your first time to drop your child off at sleepaway camp. This can understandably be a very nerve racking and emotional event. As hard as it is, we believe that homesickness is great opportunity for growth. Why is this so? I encourage you to read these two blogs I’ve written based upon the book Homesick & Happy by Michael Thompson.

Parent Book Club

One of the biggest benefits to camp for your campers is unplugging from the busyness of life and connecting with mother nature. This summer for our Huawni Parent Book Club I will be blogging on the the book Last Child in the Woods. This book has great research about the benefits to our kids being in nature. To get a free copy of the book, go here and reply at the bottom of the blog. I look forward to learning together.

We will keep you posted…more to come soon!
