Session 1 Opening Day is in the books! We would like to thank all of our camp families for mustering through the rain. We hope you had an enjoyable and easy check in despite all the wetness.
We are so very excited that you have chosen to partner with Huawni in your child’s growing up! As parents, Mandi and I realize how big of a deal it is to drop off your most prized possession, and we are confident that your kiddos are in excellent hands with this summer’s Huawni counseling staff. Today I was encouraged to see so many first-year campers. It was as special day.
This evening we hosted campers in the Dining Hall for camper orientation and then we had a fabulous home-style meal featuring Ms. Ada’s famous, famous, MOST FAMOUS fried chicken! After supper our counseling staff put on the Opening Night Show. Counselors performed several skits along with a few improv acts…the campers laughed a lot and loved the show.
For many of you, it was your first time to drop your child off at sleepaway camp. This can understandably be a very nerve racking and emotional event. As hard as it is, we believe that homesickness is great opportunity for growth. Why is this so? I encourage you to read these two blogs I’ve written based upon the book Homesick & Happy by Michael Thompson.

Homesick & Happy Chapter 1 – Off They Go
We highly encourage you to utilize letter writing as well as sending your camper emails through your CampInTouch login. Also, be sure to log into your CampInTouch account to see the photos we will be posting daily. And finally, be sure and subscribe to our blog page by going here and clicking on the subscribe via email blue button.
One of the biggest benefits to camp for your campers is unplugging from the busyness of life and connecting with mother nature. This summer for our Huawni Parent Book Club I will be blogging on the the book Last Child in the Woods. This book has great research about the benefits to our kids being in nature. To get a free copy of the book, go here and reply at the bottom of the blog. I look forward to learning together.
Lights out has been called here at Camp and campers are breaking in their sleeping bags and getting settled in their bunks. I believe everyone is ready for the first day of camp!
We will keep you posted! Good night!
