Day one got off to a great start here in Session 3.
This morning I ventured down to the soccer field to hang out with one of our younger cabins. After playing the name game (we all alliterated our names with a food) and meeting our first-year campers, I got to witness something really cool. The girls were taking a water break after playing some soccer and began to play in the dirt. There was a dirt spot where the old pool shed used to sit and they began what turned into their own archeological dig (don’t worry parents, we wash our hands frequently!). They found an old animal bone, and by their pure excitement, you would have thought they were uncovering the 8th wonder of the world. I wonder if this this would have ever happened had the girls had their cells phones or had a tv been on. I doubt it.
How could such a simple activity break spark so much imagination and excitement? We believe that simple fun is the most fun, and it is times like these that remind me of that. Many times what makes Camp special is getting away from all the other stuff— the demanding schedules, soccer practice three times a week, school and homework and then more homework, and all the busyness of life. At Camp kids can enjoy the simple things, and it is a joy to see their imagination take over.
Today has been a smooth day at Camp. It’s been warm again, but right now it looks like we may gets some rain, which would be nice to have. Instead of Capture the Flag, we have called an audible and will be hosting Skit Night. This actually works out well because Skit Night is one of the first opportunities for a cabin to mesh together towards a common goal. The winner will take the Huawni Spirit Stick, and at the very least, everyone will pocket a few meaningful memories that might even last a lifetime.
Tonight we will host our first Sing Song, likely in the Dining Hall. You Are My Sunshine can’t be sung soon enough. We will keep you posted!
