Tribal Competition has started and you could feel the energy last night on the Huawni Soccer Field. Tejas and Caddo squared off for their first team competition. Huawni Soccer is a big deal at camp, and many kids who never play soccer back home really get into it here.
Last night Caddo won Game One 3-0 and in Game Two Tejas Edged out Caddo 3-2. Marcus F., William L., and Griffin A. all scored goals for Caddo. Jack M. (2 goals) and Jack D. scored goals for Tejas as well in regulation. With each team winning one game a piece, it led to a shootout. During the shootout round, Tate. G scored the winning goal as Caddo took 1st place.
I love watching campers compete. I maybe love even more watching counselors coach well and encourage their campers. Growing up in the 90s at Camp one coach that sticks out to me is Chris Level (a.k.a. Level). Level was a big guy (6 feet 8 inches) and had a big personality. I loved watching him coach as a counselor. He got every bit out of his campers during competition. When they didn’t believe in themselves, Level did. It was really fun to watch.
This morning in staff meeting it came time to nominate camper of the day. One of our counselors wanted to nominate a camper named Luke. They said during soccer, all night, Luke was encouraging both Caddo and Tejas. Luke was going out of his way to even encourage kids who were down after their team got scored on. I was not surprised, as this was Chris’s son. We got to literally witness a legacy of leadership last night in one of our campers. I loved seeing that, and today at lunch Luke was honored as our camper of the day.
We are now headed to the Carving Trees for some mud, watermelon, and some fun in the woods. Tonight we will relax a bit as we cookout on the Front Lawn. We are soaking up Session 2!
