I’m back!! I’ve learned more about Huawni secrets and feel like a part of this family. Because of this, I have chosen not to disclose any information – for the time being. Stay tuned…
We are four days into Session 2 at Camp Huawni and I am continuing to learn so much about Camp here in East Texas. I’ve been lucky enough to become a part of this family and a part of the traditions. For example, I was able to participate in the game, Chubby Bunny, which happened at Fishing on Tuesday night. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this spectacle, a few chosen counselors get to stand in front of Camp and discover how many marshmallows you can fit in your mouth while still being able to say the words “chubby bunny”. For the record, I fit 12 and then became very aware of my gag reflex.
This game is such a good example of what summer camp activities are like at Camp Huawni. One of our core values is, “simple fun is the most fun”, and that is exemplified by the ability to entrance 160 campers at the same time using only a bag of marshmallows.
For this game specifically, two of our counselors Sarah and Qashr, tied at 20 marshmallows. The audience then decided it was too gross to watch them stuff any more marshmallows into their mouths. I now understand why this game is strictly for counselors.
I would have never thought that my summer fun would consist of stuffing marshmallows into my mouth, but for some reason, it was the most fun I’ve had while at camp. Fishing itself is a huge tradition here at Camp Huawni and to be able to enjoy cane pole fishing, marshmallows, and Travis singing songs all in one night is one of the best summer camp experiences I could think up.
Experiencing camp has shown me the value in simple fun, playing outdoors, tradition, and the meaningful relationships that can be created. While at Fishing, Travis asked the kids to raise their hands if they feel most like themselves at camp. Every camper raised his or her hand. As staff at a sleepaway camp, I get to watch your kids having the time of their lives and experiencing complete freedom. It’s so refreshing to see them dancing, laughing and not having a care in the world. I’m very thankful for Camp Huawni, the experience I am having here, and for getting to watch the campers thrive at summer camp.
