Yesterday at Camp Huawni was one of those days where everyone I ran into was in a good mood. We are getting into our Session 3 groove. Counselors are pumped to get to know these kids and love them well, while we experience all that Camp Huawni is! We got right into activities today with the Critter, Slide, and Trolley. Campers are all warmed up and ready now to really get into camp.

The rest of the day we had more activities on a beautiful, sunny evening. We ended the night with Fishing, s’mores, and some Sing Song. It’s on this night when camp really begins to start feeling like family. We’re two days into Session 3 and everyone is beginning to find comfort in their new and old friends & counselors.

Meredith H. bites into her first s’more of Session 3 after patiently waiting for it to roast.

Welcoming new campers into the traditions of our summer camp happens so smoothly. As a staff member, I get to witness campers explaining to their new friends about the tradition. For example, I heard Abigail B. from Willow Glen (it’s her 5th year at camp this summer!) talk about fishing saying,

It’s like normal fishing, you have to be patient – but you also eat worms. Everyone here is really great if you don’t catch anything, they tell you ‘it’s okay, maybe the fish just aren’t biting’.

Campers are getting it! They understand camp and what we’re doing. Simple fun is the most fun. We use bamboo cane fishing poles with worms and it makes for one of the best nights at camp! Abigail is learning about being patient and gets to experience that with the other campers here at Huawni.

Tate P. caught his fish last night at Huawni Pond!

Our Women’s Staff Director, Kelsey Biscoe, said at Morning Staff Meeting that Fishing was what made her fall in love with our summer camp. For the alumni who read our daily updates, what do you think makes Fishing such an important part about Camp Huawni?

Sisters Charlotte (camper) and Grace (Counselor in Training) smile while making s’mores together!
