Last night we hosted the famous, famous, MOST FAMOUS Huawni Talent Show. It seemed to be a big turning point in the session as many of our campers mustered up the courage to share their giftings with all of Camp. Two acts in particular really exemplified what the Huawni Talent Show is all about. Cayson W. was set to perform his harmonica act. At first, he ran off the stage because it is, of course, in front of the whole Camp. After receiving some help and encouragement from his counselors, he got back on stage and performed a really, really good harmonica tune. When he hit the last note, the crowd went wild! That short moment was a long leap for Cayson as Camp got to witness a very special moment. Another memorable moment was when Amanda A. got up to sing Man In The Mirror. Amanda’s confidence and courage shined, and again Huawni counselors and campers roared in applause when she was finished. It seemed to be a defining moment in Amanda’s session.
One big tradition here at Huawni is Staff Meeting. It’s one opportunity, every morning before the kids wake up, where all our staff (except for the ones watching your children of course) grab a hot cup of coffee and prepare for the day ahead. It really is this kind of throwback communal experience. One of the things we will do from time to time is share spots, which are sweet moments that we get to experience with campers. This morning there were more than several uplifting moments that staff shared about your children. This morning also marked what we call The Turn, which is the half-way point of the session. These kids are really getting in their groove, and if you witnessed them going to and from activities, you’d think many of them are right at home. They are completely unplugged from cell phones and TVs and soaking up the simplicity of camp.
Here in a moment I will be joining the rest of Camp as we are headed on a hike to the Carving Trees. Sunshine, mud, creek water, and most importantly, ice-cold water melon, will all be shared. Tonight we will have a cookout, storytelling, and a truck ride to go look for the wild woman. Today is a little more unstructured on purpose as we try to slow down a bit leading up to Cookout. There are lot of benefits to unstructured play and the mud fight at the Carving Trees is another opportunity for this to happen.
Okay, I literally have to go…the watermelon is waiting! We will keep you posted!
