It’s amazing what all happens at Camp in 24 hours. Here’s a quick update.
Last night Camp joined together to play an energetic game of Capture the Flag on the front lawn. As usual, counselors were decked out in weird costumes as everyone tried to steal the flag and bring it over to their side. It was as we like to say — pure, zany fun!
After Capture the Flag we hosted our first Sing Song of the session at the pool. Thanks to technology these days, we actually recorded it! Want to listen? Go here to listen to last night’s sing song. Who knows…you might even hear your camper singing! Sing Song has been a long-standing tradition at Huawni. If you tell someone outside of Huawni that everyone just gathers around at the end of the day to sing these old folksy songs, they would probably think it’s super weird. But, we do it nonetheless and it has been one of the most favorite evening programs (EP) for both campers and staff.
This morning after breakfast we once again had cabin inspection. As a youth development summer camp, inspection is one of many integral activities that teach campers essential life lessons. Yes…we actually make campers clean their cabin daily! This is a great opportunity for our campers to learn responsibility. Sweeping, picking up trash, making beds, organizing trunks, putting away dirty clothes, emptying the trash, and brushing teeth are all things the inspector checks out. Cabins have also been known to schmooze their inspector in hopes of getting a few extra points. Inspectors enter cabins in character, so it’s always fun for campers. Hopefully your child will be a bit more punctual when it comes to helping out around the house when they get home. They know how to do it!
Today campers have a full day of activities. After supper we will be putting on our mud boots and jean for cabin portraits, fishing, and s’mores over the campfire. Tonight will be a very relaxed evening. There’s a gentle breeze on Huawni Pond and hopefully we’ll get to watch the sunset. I have been encouraged how quickly our Session 2 campers pick back up where they left off. Our first year campers are quickly getting the hang of the camp schedule and we are off to a good start.
