Well, the summer is finally here. The energy that has been building this week finally burst out onto the Front Lawn as Session 1 families packed the Huawni Campus. It feels good to get Camp started.
It was really cool to see all the connections that bring campers to Huawni. I got to see my best friends Josh and Katie and their son Graham who was back for his second summer. Josh and I grew up at Huawni…literally. I saw old-time friend and alum Clay Hargett whose son William will be back again this summer. I also got to meet many of our first year families who either found out about Huawni through a dear friend or some other way, like one family who told us Huawni was rated the #1 camp by the Dallas Observer. Who knew?
It was really fun getting to give tours of the brand new Boys Bathhouse today. I had the pleasure of hosting alumnus Robert Youngblood and he actually noticed that the same mint-green style brick was integrated into the new building. That was neat.
I really don’t have much to share as of yet as we are about to head to the Dining Hall for camper orientation and some delicious fried chicken prepared by our amazing and tenured cook Ms. Ada. There is so much energy here and we cannot wait to host the campers tonight as our staff will put on the famous, famous, MOST FAMOUS Opening Night Show.
For many of you, it was your first time to drop your child off at sleepaway camp. This can understandably be a very nerve racking and emotional event. As hard as it is, we believe that homesickness is great opportunity for growth. Why is this so? I encourage you to read these two blogs I’ve written based upon the book Homesick & Happy by Michael Thompson.

Homesick & Happy Chapter 1 – Off They Go
We highly encourage you to utilize letter writing as well as sending your camper emails through your CampInTouch login. Also, be sure to log into your CampInTouch account to see the photos we will be posting daily. And finally, be sure and subscribe to our blog page by going here and clicking on the subscribe via email blue button.
One of the biggest benefits to camp for your campers is unplugging from the busyness of life and connecting with mother nature. Again this summer for our Huawni Parent Book Club I will be blogging on the the book Last Child in the Woods. This book has great research about the benefits to our kids being in nature. To get a free copy of the book, go here and reply at the bottom of the blog. I look forward to learning together.
We are so excited and honored to be spending the week with your children. Our desire is that they will leave our gates in a week better knowing their true significance and purpose. Here we go!
