Hello, I’m Angel O’Brien. This is my second summer being a counselor at Camp Huawni. I am from Denison, TX. I also and going to be graduating from Oklahoma Baptist University with a BA in Graphic Design in the Winter. Camp is a wonderful place to spend the summer, and here is what happened on just one day.

So the first Wednesday of each session usually starts out with throwing all the kids in during flag raising. Playday and Uprising begins, but this Wednesday we decided to switch it up. We went on with flag raising like normal. All of camp was off to breakfast and headed back for cabin inspection.

Morning activities continued on, all the kids were anxious for their awaiting fate. Sweet Gum Suite and Willow Glen headed off to the new Huawni Pond. Cedar Flats and Cedar Ridge enjoyed the New Ropes Course. The rest of the cabins had a morning filled with Critter Pond activities, sand volleyball, bikes, archery, and much more.

We searched to make sure all the campers got soaked! Don’t try running away from our Counselors…

After an exhausting morning, we were all ready for lunch. Mmmmm Taco Soup. As we were all waiting outside, the time came. “Chicken Train” played from the speakers and chaos erupted. Campers were running like crazy, while counselors picked them up and tossed them into the Critter Pond. Just in case they avoided being thrown into the pool, they got sprayed with the water hose. It didn’t stop outside. Once we were inside, pitchers of ice water got dumped onto many counselors, as a way of payback.

That afternoon, camp was dedicated to Playday activities and Uprising activities. Playday included an egg toss, pie in the eye, minnow catch in the pool, and the ice water pour. Uprising had a sweaty game of capture the flag, that included “pinecone” ammo.

After everyone finished with dinner, we started the Famous Famous, Most Famous SKIT NIGHT!!! As each cabin presented their long-rehearsed skits, the crowd was filled with laughter and cheers. One of the funniest skits was from Band-Aid. Most of the time we didn’t know quite what was going on, but Swade S. was a great improviser. The cabin that one the Spirit Stick was Berry Batch West. Their skit symbolized tribal competition and memorial history of Camp Huawni. It was definitely one for the books.
