Camp Huawni is more than just a “Summer Camp.” Every summer, the landscape of these acres of land in deep East Texas is transformed into a vibrant, thoughtful, challenging environment, chock full of fun, laughter, growth and opportunities.
Gratitude can transform common days into Thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.” – William Arthur Ward
This week, with the timing of Veteran’s Day just having passed and Thanksgiving Day being a week away, I’m struck with urge to stop and think about the amount of gratitude I have. Gratitude for being able to work with today’s youth that will be tomorrow’s leaders. Gratitude for being able to work with a Staff that will do whatever it takes to make sure a child has an awesome week or two at overnight camp. Gratitude for the parents of the campers who trust in the Huawni Team to help their child “open up,” or “grow,” or “learn to lead.” Gratitude for being able to work in a safe environment, provided at an immense cost to our friends and families of our military personnel throughout the country.
As we go through the motions of the next two weeks festivities, which are sure to include mountains of food, family fun, and I’m sure some football, think about how we can help our children, nieces and nephews, grandchildren, to understand the true meaning of gratitude. As Thanksgiving is more than just about the turkey, Camp Huawni is more than just “Summer Camp.” Both have deeper meanings, traditions and involvement in our lives.
