This week we take a deeper look at a really neat story that unfolded last summer. All kids come into the Summer with a handful of pressures. Stress, tough circumstances, being over scheduled, and self doubt, to name a few. I want to share a little insight into how one of our campers grew in patience, responsibility, and acceptance in just her first two-week session at overnight camp. Here is an interview with her mother, Ann.
TEA: What was your daughter facing before coming to camp?
AW: Before camp I think maybe she was struggling with self worth or her place in the world. She had a not so great teacher for 2nd grade that made her school year disappointing.
My daughter said she felt like she belonged at camp and was truly accepted for herself by everyone.- Ann W.
TEA: When camp was over, what changed for your daughter?
AW: She said she felt like she belonged at camp and was truly accepted for herself by everyone. After camp she seemed more patient with her little sister because she saw the example of the older campers being patient and kind to her. It was amazing to hear her say how she learned the importance of helping others because when they cleaned the cabin and not all campers help it became much harder. It showed her the power of really working as a team and supporting the team no matter what position you are in.

TEA: What would you share with parents looking at sending their child to overnight camp for the first time?
AW: I would tell parents that going to camp is a life changing experience for your child. When they get out from under your wing in a supportive and loving environment they can really fly. Camp for me was the best two weeks of my childhood and I hope that my daughter will remember her experience as that also. I hope she can come back every year and make it a lifetime experience. Thanks for all that you do and did for my child. I am forever grateful!
