We believe that rich tradition provides consistency in an inconsistent world. We’ve found over the years that campers love the consistency of camp. They know they can come back to Huawni and enjoy things that stay the same. One of those traditions, and one of my personal favorites, that happened after breakfast this morning was cabin inspection. Cabin inspection is a time when a cabin has to work together to clean their cabin. It’s been a long-standing tradition for our inspectors to be dressed up in full-blown character. This summer one of our former directors (and likely all-time inspection record holder) happened to show back up on campus. That’s right, Rob Payne (aka Batman) has been reincarnated and is back at Huawni this summer inspecting Huawni Cabins! Our campers were greeted this morning with Rob’s famous greeting heyyy mannn!
Another great thing about inspection is it teaches campers how to take responsibility and work with their hands. Emptying the trash, putting up wet laundry, organizing trunks and shoes, making their bed, turning off lights and fans, and teeth brushing are all things campers are responsible for. Campers also learn how to work together and divvy up roles. It’s a great learning opportunity and we try to have fun doing it!
Campers jumped right in this morning for their daily camp activities. Huawni Pond (paddle boarding, peddle boats & kayaking), the Critter Pond, Swim, Obstacle Course (OC), Archery, and High Ropes (including our new Giant Swing!), Sand Volleyball, Basketball, and Gaga were all in full swing this morning. I had fun with our Berry Patch West cabin this morning pulling their buddies up the giant swing. It looks really fun!!
During rest period today campers used their artistic skills creating their love letter boxes to hang in the Dining Hall. This is our mail system at camp were campers and staff can write each other encouraging notes throughout the session.
We just wrapped up break (this is where we take a gatorade and water break between periods 4 and 5) and campers are headed to their last two periods before supper. Tonight we’ll head over to Huawni Pond for cane pole fishing, s’mores, and our first Sing Song of the session.
We only have a handful of homesick campers. I’m so proud of our homesick campers (and their counselors) as they are really working through things well…no serious homesickness as of today. They are growing in front of our eyes!
What are your favorite memories of Cabin Inspection OR what encouraged you as a parent about your child cleaning up their cabin??
