You never know when the Phantom is going to show up. This morning…he did.

Here’s a little back story for our first-time Session 3 families. Huawni has lot of fun and zany traditions, and Play Day may be at the top of the list. Usually during the first week of Camp at Flag Raising, a familiar tune will surprisingly begin playing over the PA (Chicken Train by the Ozark Moutain Daredevils). Here’s a cool YouTube version of Chicken Train I found that shows the band playing live in 1976, about the time the Play Day tradition was started. When the first note of Chicken Train hits, it’s Camper’s signal to run, as their Counselors begin to chase them. Their final destination??? The Huawni swimming pool. Of course we are very careful to do this safely and make sure kids are taken care of (Lifeguard on duty, gentle, etc), but it is one of Campers’ favorite days! The Play Day Phantom is a Camp myth…apparently only he knows when the actually day will fall, and sometimes you’ll see him on the Main Cabin roof once it begins! For the rest of the morning Girls Camp enjoys Play Day and Boys Camp heads to the forrest to play Huawni Uprising, an epic game of capture the flag, dressed from head to toe in camouflage and face paint.

This morning the Huawni Counselors had a little trick up their sleeve. They didn’t even give campers time to make it all the way out to Flag Raising, as Chicken Train played right away. There were smiles, giggles, and lots of fun. Girls Camp spent the morning enjoying traditional competition in the Egg Toss, Pie in the Eye, the Minnow Chase (yes…we release minnows in the pool for Girls Camp to chase), and Ice Water on the Counselor’s Back. Boy Camp enjoyed Uprising, nature, and ice-cold watermelon.

Wednesday at Camp

This afternoon Campers will enjoy more regular activities before gearing up for Skit Night. Skit night will Campers’ first shot at collaborating together and using their creative minds. The winner will win the coveted Huawni Spirit Stick! Also, we’ve been very busy making sure our campers and staff stay hydrated, as the heat index in Texas has been higher than normal. We’ve been putting extra ice in our water monsters and are making sure our campers carry their water bottles to all activities. This is another reason why every day we have break between periods 4 and 5. Campers get to sit in the cool shade and drink Gaterade and water and stay out of the heat in the hottest part of the day. Once Thursday arrives, we’ll see our week pick up even more so as we’ll have Talent Show and then the Tribal Competition Ceremony.

Again, thank you parents for being patient with our picture upload process! We will continue to upload early evening each day at a minimum. Hopefully y’all are enjoying seeing pictures each day of your child and of what all is happening at Camp.
