Meet the big man on campus! Drake O’Bryant has joined the full-time Huawni team as our Campus Director! Drake is a wonderful, servant-hearted leader with a passion to enrich the lives of campers and staff alike. We’re stoked to have him be a part of the Summer 2020 fun! Get to know a bit more about Drake below, and please join us in welcoming him to the Huawni fam!

Share your experience of working with summer camp. What drew you to Camp Huawni?

DO: I have worked at a camp for the past six summers in multiple, different roles including counselor, boat driver, and in leadership. In addition to that, I have spent the past three years working full-time in outdoor education at a camp. It was through camp that I made some of my closest friends and even met my wife, Brooke.

What drew me to Huawni was the small camp feel and the traditions. It will be refreshing to go to a throwback summer camp, and I am counting down the days until the sessions begin!

What does your role as Huawni’s Campus Director look like?

DO: My role as Camp Huawni’s Campus Director essentially means that I will be leading the day-to-day of camp, along with the rest of the full-time and leadership teams. My goal is to not only make sure camp is safe, but also fun for the staff and campers. I hope that staff and campers alike leave Huawni knowing that they are loved and have a purpose (in addition to having the best week/summer of their lives)!

What are you most excited about this upcoming summer?

DO: I am most excited to get out onto property and have campers there! I get so excited thinking about the kids that we will have this summer. I look forward to be immersed in the culture and traditions that Huawni has and to love everyone in the process. Camp will always hold a special place in my heart, and I am thrilled for an opportunity to help others have experiences that they will take with them for the rest of their lives.

What do you hope for Huawni families to experience/notice that is encouraging this summer?

DO: I hope that the Huawni families experience and notice the care that our staff have for their kids and them as parents. When they drop their kids off, I want them to leave knowing that our staff will love and care for their kids deeply. I want them to be assured that their kids will have fun getting to unplug and retreat from the normalcies of life while getting some time out in the woods!
