How 2020 Became Our Best Summer Ever

With the summer season officially approaching its end, we can’t help but reflect and marvel on these past several months. We feel extremely blessed to have continued the beloved traditions of Camp Huawni for its 55th year, and we’re even more grateful that we were able to do so with the trust and support of our camp families. By partnering with us in our preparedness plan, we not only were able to have a safe and healthy summer…we had zero COVID-19 outbreaks, a feat that will astound us for ages to come.

This summer certainly looked different in many ways, but we remained determined for Camp to be a place that provides consistency and a sense of belonging to our campers. In the midst of the chaos and troubling uncertainty in our world, Camp was a refuge where kids could simply be kids. Our campers still got to enjoy Ms. Ada’s Famous Fried Chicken, go fishing on a Tuesday night, laugh their socks off during Skit Night, go mudding at the Carving Trees, conquer the high ropes course, eat infinite amounts of watermelon, sing songs underneath the starry sky, feel that Shelby County Breeze, and so forth - all while building friendships and discovering their true significance! We heard over and over again from our campers that this summer - even during a global pandemic - was their best summer ever.

There’s a little thing in the Piney Woods that we like to call the “Huawni Magic”. A huge part of that magic was our summer staff. Camp would not have been possible this year without all the hard work, efforts, and sacrifices of our leadership team, counselors, nurses, media team, CITs, and maintenance and kitchen staff. As we navigated the challenges of this summer together, they went above and beyond in leading, loving, and caring for our campers.

We’re super excited for next year, and our full-time team is already working diligently on how to make Summer 2021 even better! Until then, take a walk down memory lane and get a glimpse of all the fun from this past summer!
