Sending your child to camp for the first summer is a big deal. Your child is finally ready to grow up in all the ways that we, as parents, just can’t do alone
This past week, my good friend Trevor (first-year Huawni parent) called and said, “Travis, give me the pro tips for first-year camp parents.” I figured I’d relay those in a short blog to all our first-time summer camp parents, but it’s a big deal!
My extraordinary wife (soon to be a Licensed Professional Counselor) created this form several years ago so that your child’s director and cabin counselors would know your child through and through before stepping into the cabin. Take this seriously and turn it in a week or so before your child’s session so our staff can review it.
One of the beautiful things about camp is that the separation from your child actually gives you the unique opportunity of letter writing. What have you always wanted to say to your child that you’ve yet to communicate? Letters are a great way to bolster your child’s confidence while away at summer camp. Don’t forget too that you can instantly send a message through your Bunk1 app!
Both of these books will remind you of why camp is maybe the most valuable investment you’ll make for your child this summer.
Connecting with others going through a similar experience is alway a healthy thing. We need encouragement and perspective while our kids are away, and just making a few phone calls and debriefing our experience at home with kids away can be a game changer.
Your inner circle wants to see your camper thriving, and pictures really do say a thousand words. Connect grandma, grandpa, and close friends through your Bunk1 app before opening day gets here!
Finally, I want to leave you with some very encouraging words. Way to go on letting your child experience the Huawni Magic this summer! You are sending them to a safe and wholesome environment where they can take safe risks, look up to extraordinary counselors, and be led by a phenomenal directing staff who are all in for your camper having the summer of their lives. Take courage. Soak up the ride to Camp, be excited about seeing the joy and growth on their faces when you pick them back up!
