Our mission at Camp Huawni is LTK, short for “Love the Kids”. We define love as accepting where one currently is and striving for who one truly is. Our goal is to love in this way— unconditionally, unselfishly, and for the benefit of others. As we prepare for another summer, we are making preparations to create a safe, nurturing, wholesome, and fun environment for our parents’ most prized possession- their children (and our campers!). One big part of this is setting clear guidelines that communicate what is and is not acceptable at summer camp. Doing so protects and nurtures every camper and creates space and freedom for campers to enjoy camp and begin the process of knowing who they really are. When we talk about love at Camp, we really can’t emphasize enough it’s meaning— accepting where one currently is and striving for who one truly is. This is the true engine under the LTK hood.
To make LTK memorable, we use the acronym “LOVE”.
Isn’t it amazing how what comes from our mouths reflects what’s in our hearts? While at summer camp, we seek to use uplifting language that builds others up, not that tears people down.
As we live more life, we begin to realize more and more that life is truly not about me. While at summer camp, we focus on putting others first. This require a lot of patience, both with ourselves and others.
Respecting our fellow campers and Counselors is vital to creating a wholesome environment for everyone. We believe that it’s important to own up to when we are wrong and apologize quickly. Newsflash- we ALL fail and no one is perfect! We also realize that it’s not okay to blame, deflect, or lie when we are wrong or hurt someone.
At Huawni, we believe in and promote being kind to and celebrating others. Being rude, resentful, or tearing others down is not okay and only causes division.
One of the best things about summer camp for kids is that it provides a safe environment to take risks and fail. In fact, we believe that failure is one of the best ways to learn in life. It’s a huge opportunity to grow. At camp, we give out simple consequences (i.e. a conversation with their Counselor, sitting out of an activity period, a call home to their parents, etc.) so that campers can learn that their decisions and how they treat others, matters. We love by giving consequences, knowing that our campers will one day face much bigger, real-world decisions.
We are excited to LTK this summer. It is an honor to walk with your kids every step of the way!
