I’m delighted to announce the newest member of our year-round team, Miss Rachel Marek! Rachel’s official position will be director of sales and marketing. Essentially, Rachel will have the privilege of sharing Huawni with our new camp families. Rachel is an excellent communicator and stellar photographer; she took many of those amazing shots you parents saw this summer.
This morning I got a chance to do a Q&A with Rachel, and here’s what she had to say.
TEA: What excites you most about joining the Huawni Team?
RM: I am excited to talk with families and kids about camp and then to get to see kids come to a place where they can fully be themselves. I cannot wait to work with a team of people who live and breath simple fun outdoors that is built on tradition. I also don’t hate the idea of going to summer camp for a couple of months each year.
TEA: So what exactly are you going to be doing for Camp?
RM: I will be connecting with families about coming to camp and answering any questions they have. I want to see as many kids come to camp as possible so they can experience the life-change that happens at Huawni.
TEA: What’s your favorite Huawni Tradition? Any stories you’d like to share?
RM: My favorite Huawni Tradition is cook out and story telling with Mike. I remember the first story telling I went to and feeling like I was glued to the TV, waiting to see what would happen next, but it was even better because I was outside on a Texas summer night with some of my most favorite people in the world.
TEA: What makes the Huawni Staff special?
RM: Huawni staff are people who can have fun wherever they go. You know people who work at Huawni know what it takes to have a good time because they do not need “stuff” to have fun—it’s more about being together.
TEA: What differentiates the Huawni camper experience?
RM: I have had my fair share of working at camps and none compare to Camp Huawni. I had always heard how welcoming Huawni is to all types of people, but I really felt it at Huawni because we do not have expectations for people. Huawni loves people just because they are human, not for any other reason. With that, kids feel empowered to be who they are and grow into who they were created to be. I believe Huawni prepares kids for real-life more than maybe any other experience. At Huawni, kids grow in their independence, their personalities are affirmed, and each individual child is constantly encouraged by all staff, not just their own counselors. Huawni truly is a second family, a second home away from home.
TEA: What’s your favorite Camp memory from this past summer?
My favorite Camp memory from this summer is when Erin Delony and Alex Perez, counselors, acted as Sponge Bob Square Pants and Patrick for the talent show. They both really got into character and I think it was the best talent show of the entire summer.
TEA: What are you looking most forward to this fall?
RM: I am looking forward to learning a lot and getting to know families who make Huawni so special. I am also excited to start planning for Summer 2014!
