Emergency Weather
We are made to play outdoors—but not in lightning storms. Camp Huawni maintains 8 NOAA weather alert radios throughout camp, providing real-time severe weather warnings 24/7. Our directors monitor professional weather apps continuously and maintain direct communication with Shelby County Emergency Management. At the first sign of danger, outdoor activities cease immediately and campers move to safety.
Our Emergency Weather Protocol:
When severe weather threatens—whether tornado, flash flooding, or other dangerous conditions—we immediately activate our comprehensive emergency response protocols. First, we move all campers and staff to designated shelter locations (our Dining Hall for most emergencies). Once everyone is safe and accounted for, we notify local emergency management and law enforcement of the situation. Then we immediately contact all parents via email and Bunk1 with updates on your camper’s safety, the nature of the weather event, and our response. We continue providing updates until the situation is resolved and normal operations resume. We take weather safety seriously because protecting our campers is how we preserve Camp Huawni as their second home for years to come. Our rich tradition provides consistency in an inconsistent world—including the consistency of knowing we’ll always prioritize safety over schedules. Texas weather may be unpredictable, but our commitment to your child’s safety never wavers.
Staying connected matters—especially in emergencies. Camp Huawni maintains redundant communication systems to ensure we can always reach emergency services and parents. We have fiber optic internet as our primary connection, with satellite backup internet in case of outages. Our emergency PA system operates without internet, ensuring we can alert campers and staff even if power or connectivity fails. We also maintain multiple emergency contact methods for parents including phone, email, and Bunk1 messaging. When life is meaningful relationships, staying connected to families is part of keeping everyone safe.
Camp Huawni is committed to transparency about our property and your child’s safety. While portions of our grounds (specifically the “bottoms” area near our soccer field and archery range) are located within the 100-year floodplain, no cabins, buildings, or operational structures are in the floodplain. All sleeping quarters, dining facilities, and activity buildings are on elevated ground outside floodplain boundaries. We maintain comprehensive flash flood emergency procedures and continuously monitor weather conditions through our NOAA weather alert system. In the rare event of a flash flood warning, all campers and staff immediately evacuate to high ground—our Dining Hall and Flag Pole Hill are both elevated well above the floodplain. We are made to play outdoors safely, and that includes knowing exactly where water could go and ensuring your child is never in its path. Our rich tradition includes decades of safely operating through Texas weather because we plan ahead and respond quickly. As required by Texas law, all parents receive detailed floodplain notification and emergency procedures during registration and must acknowledge receipt before their camper attends.
