Abuse Prevention
Camp Huawni is a second home for our families, and we protect it fiercely. Before staff even arrive at camp, every team member and volunteer completes MinistrySafe abuse prevention training. This comprehensive program teaches our team to recognize warning signs, maintain appropriate boundaries, and respond immediately to concerns. No one has contact with campers until this training is complete—it’s a non-negotiable first step in joining our team. But training is just the beginning. We enforce a zero-tolerance policy for any form of abuse—physical, emotional, or sexual. Any staff member or camper who violates our abuse prevention standards is immediately removed from camp, no exceptions. We also maintain the Rule of Three—a non-negotiable policy ensuring that a camper is never alone with just one other person, whether staff or camper. This applies everywhere at camp, including private areas like bathhouses and cabins. We know this can sometimes be inconvenient, but we never compromise on this boundary because it protects everyone in our care—campers and staff alike. We’ve also created multiple pathways for reporting concerns. In our Dining Hall, we maintain a Talk Box—a secure, locked box where campers and staff can anonymously report anything that makes them uncomfortable or concerned. Only the Executive Director has a key, and the box is checked daily. This gives every person at camp—whether they’re seven or twenty-seven—a safe way to speak up when something doesn’t feel right. Protecting our campers is how we honor the rich tradition of trust families have placed in us for generations. When parents send their children to camp, they’re trusting us with what matters most—we take that sacred responsibility seriously. Our layered approach to abuse prevention ensures that Camp Huawni remains the safe, loving community where meaningful relationships can flourish and every child can know and be known without fear.
Some things have no place at camp. Camp Huawni maintains a zero-tolerance policy for bullying, harassment, abuse, discrimination, weapons, drugs, alcohol, and any behavior that threatens the safety or wellbeing of our community. This policy applies to campers and staff alike. When violations occur, we respond swiftly and decisively—which may include immediate dismissal from camp without refund. We also maintain zero tolerance for staff violations of safety protocols, boundary policies, or abuse prevention standards. Creating a safe, respectful community means drawing clear lines and enforcing them consistently. Your child deserves nothing less.
