The Huawni Daily Schedule is about as engrained in Camp Huawni as the Pinson Creek. It’s the ultimate sleepaway camp schedule and has stood the test of time, and it’s become a mainstay for so many Huawni Campers over the years. Kids love consistency and they love to come back to camp and jump back into this simple but rhythmic day.
Day 1 of regular activities commenced today and campers hit the ground running…literally. There was a lot of excitement over at the Ropes Course today. The new Giant Swing was rocking and rolling. I talked to Cooper H. about it, and he said he had a pretty big rush right when he pulled the chord. He was smiling ear to ear.
Tonight campers are enjoying free time after supper. I got a chance to play some catch with one of our campers who plays select baseball…it was good to put on a glove and mitt again and just enjoy this simple pleasure.
Campers will soon be amassing upon the Front Yard for an old school game of Capture the Flag (CTF). For those of you who don’t know, it’s no ordinary game of CTF. It’s quite weird. We will break camper us onto two teams. Then, various theme songs will play as counselors, one by one or two by two, make their entrance clad in crazy and colorful outfits. Enter the famous, famous, MOST FAMOUS Playday Closet! It’s the closet where we keep all our costumes. The next hour or so is spent either chasing after the flag or chasing after your opponents to put them in jail. It’s good ole fashion fun, and a good workout at that.
Also tonight we’ll host our first Sing Song of Session 2. This will be held on the pool deck. Our Session 2 campers are Sing Song vets, and know most of the words to every song. We’re excited to get Sing Song kicked off tonight. I’ll do my best to record it and post it soon!
Today in rest periods our campers created their love letter boxes. Love letters is an internal mail system at Camp, where campers and staff write each other notes of encouragement.
Homesickness at sleepaway camp is very normal, and usually in the first few days we’re helping campers grow through this very normal feeling that we all go through. Homesickness this session is remarkably really sparse. Other than a couple of campers who have dealt with it mildly in previous summers, it’s practically non-existent. Kudos to our staff as they are keeping very close tabs on each and every camper.
For those who have been to Huawni before, or who have had a child at camp before, what is your favorite part of the Huawni Schedule?
