The first full day of Camp is underway here in Session 3! Today Campers woke up at 8am to the sound of music on flagpole hill. Boys camp, especially our younger campers, had been up for some time as they still have the most energy at Camp (this will change come Wednesday once they get a few days of camp under their belt). Flag Raising, which included the Pledge of Allegiance and Pine Top singing the Birdie Song (and Boys Camp rebutting) happened right on que. The session was officially underway!
After breakfast campers got their first shot at cabin inspection. Trunks were organized, wet clothes were put on the clothesline, teeth were brushed, floors and steps were swept, and Inspectors (in character of course) filed through cabins looking for the most minute dirt. This was our campers’ first shot at learning to be responsible for cleaning up as well as docking some points in hopes of winning a pizza party (given to the boys and girls camp cleanest cabins of the session).
This morning campers had a full day of activities— 3 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon. Band Aid was first to conquer the Critter and they didn’t waste any time. Huawni Pond was also a popular activity today as the waterfront was super refreshing.
For dinner we enjoyed Ms. Ada’s tasty pasta and salad. Currently, campers and staff have joined in for a old school game of Capture the Flag. Counselors are all duded up in their crazy costumes, which adds to the evening. Tonight we’ll gather around the pool deck for our first Sing Song of the session…I’ll try and record tonight and post it so that everyone can listen in soon!
I got to catch up with a few campers today and see what was going on in their world about how today went. I always enjoy getting first hand just what our Huawni Campers are experiencing and seeing things from their perspective. They really do say it best. So…I hope you enjoy hearing from your campers!
“Today I realized that I’m the camper that all the other guys look up two. The past two summers I’ve looked up to other guys, and now I’m the guy, and I’m excited. Today was really amazing. I loved getting to have a special dinner at Huawni Pond with all the Running Deer crew and hanging with my favorite counselor Will.” – Parker B.
_“Today was lots of fun! I really loved being out at Huawni Pond on the water…I love water activities at Huawni. The best part of the day was seeing and reconnecting with all my friends.” – MK D.
_“I’d say that today was really chill. I really enjoyed being with my friends. It was a great way to start the session.” – John R. and Jack S.
“This is my first time in a new session…it was interesting. I was nervous, but after spending the day with my new friends I loved it! I met new people and the day was really relaxing. I enjoyed just hanging with friends and listening to Natalie play ukulele.” – Avery M.
“Today was really fun. We got a lot in for our first day of camp. I really enjoyed meeting everybody and cabin time. It’s smaller than I expected and I’ve liked that because I know everyone and can call them by name.” Emma L., 1st year camper
“One word that describes my last 24 hours is FRIED CHICKEN! It’s my favorite. Today was exciting and fun and sweaty!” Eli P.
I just want to say thank you to all our parents for being patient with picture uploads. Our internet here at Camp has been super slow and we’re trying to get the issue resolved. Just to let you know, we will be making trips into Nacogdoches daily and should have pics up by 7pm daily. Please bear with us..thanks for understanding! The beauty of camp is remote and in nature…the downside is that Internet options are not great!
Parents…what are you experiencing at home while your camper is away their first day of camp?
