Wednesday was chalked full of special moments and marked the half way point of Session 1! We enjoyed some gentle showers in the morning as well as a full slate of activities. Walking around camp, you could see our campers enjoying themselves. How often do they get to play in the rain at home?
Half time during this session also brings with it one of our most treasured traditions— Hike to the Carving Trees! Feet shuffled and laughter echoed on our half-mile hike down the Camp Road. As campers approached the large bend in Pinson Creek, the mud fight ensued! Your kiddos turned Pinson Creek into one massive mud playground! Campers enjoyed throwing mud, eating watermelon, and getting to carve their names in the trees. It was almost like our campers were made for this moment…. they loved it! Here’s a cool fact for you first-time Huawni parents- we still have tree carvings from the 60’s right here at the Carving Trees!
Last night we also got to enjoy Cookout, which included Cookout favorites like hot dogs, Storytelling & Sing Song. We heard TJ do a fantastic job retelling our most prized stories- the Blue Wolf, Jo Shields, and the Wild Woman. Ms. Ada’s hot dogs were also mighty fine! Cookout is like one big family picnic, and our Huawni Family truly enjoyed each other last night. Before the night ended, counselors Ryan S., Chris B., Max P., and Luke C led us in This Old House. This song was one of Daddy Earl Adams’s (our founder) favorite songs, and staff continue to dedicate this song in tribute to him (and Mrs. Adams) every cookout.
It was just the right gathering for just the right day here at Huawni. Enjoying the rain. A hike. Time together. Singing together in the sanctuary that is Huawni.
Because of the rain, we had to delay our annual Wild Woman Hunt to tonight… but word is that she is out somewhere in the Piney Woods, so chances are we’ll spot her tonight!
We finished the evening gathered around the pool underneath the East Texas sky for Sing Song. It was just the right gathering for just the right day here at Huawni. Enjoying the rain. A hike. Time together. Singing together in the sanctuary that is Huawni. Wish you were here? Well, thanks to our KWNI Radio Soundcloud Station, you can!
