Camp Honey Creek vs Camp Huawni: Girls-Only or Coed?

Most comparisons come down to a spread of small differences. This one comes down to a single question, and it is worth answering before you look at anything else: do you want a girls-only camp or a coed one?

Everything else — setting, size, cost — matters after that, and not much before it.

This is a comparison written by one of the two camps in it, which you should factor in. What we have tried to do is keep every claim about Camp Honey Creek to something published on campchtx.com — checked on 24 August 2026 — and be specific about the families we are not the right answer for. Where they publish nothing, we say so instead of filling the gap.

Who Camp Honey Creek is

From their own site, as of August 2026: Camp Honey Creek for Girls is in Hunt, Texas, in the Hill Country. It is girls-only. They state they are a member of C.A.M.P. and licensed by the Texas Department of State Health Services; we found no ACA accreditation claim. Their stated focus is developing "well-rounded individuals with good moral character, strong values and, especially, high self esteem," in "a safe, caring and nurturing environment," and they emphasise that "campers are not just numbers at Honey Creek." Ages, session lengths and tuition are not published on the page we read.

Who we are

Camp Huawni is a traditional, coed overnight camp in Timpson, in the East Texas Piney Woods, running since 1965. Campers are 7 to 17. Sessions are one week or two, on 600-plus acres.

The scale is deliberately small: a maximum of 100 girls and 70 boys in a session, about 50 college-aged staff, a 3.2 to 1 camper-to-staff ratio last summer, and cabins holding at most 14 campers with 2 counselors. Cabins are screened wooden buildings with bathhouses just outside — traditional rather than modern.

We are unplugged. No phones, tablets or laptops, for anyone, the whole session.

We are licensed by the Texas Department of State Health Services under the Texas Youth Camp Health and Safety Act. We are not ACA accredited.

Where Camp Honey Creek is the better choice

If you want a girls-only camp, they are and we are not. That is the whole thing, and it is a completely legitimate preference. For a lot of girls, particularly around eleven to thirteen, a summer with the coed dynamic simply removed is freeing in a way that is hard to arrange anywhere else. If that is what you are looking for, we are not a substitute and you should stop comparing us.

If you are in the western half of Texas. Hunt is Hill Country; we are four to five hours east of it.

If Hill Country river swimming is the picture in your head. That stretch of Texas has spring-fed water and a century of camp tradition, and it is genuinely lovely.

Where we are the better choice

If you have a son and a daughter. One drop-off, one closing day, one set of dates. Siblings are on separate sides of camp with separate cabins, but they are in the same place — and for families juggling two camp calendars that is worth more than it sounds.

If your daughter wants a coed camp. Some do, clearly and specifically. Ours is coed with separate cabin areas, capped at 100 girls, so it is not a large mixed crowd either.

If you want the price up front. Ours is published in full on the dates and rates page, with every registration window.

If you want an explicit phone policy in writing. We are unplugged for the entire session and say so plainly.

If East Texas is your shorter drive. From Houston, Dallas or Shreveport, Timpson is closer than the Hill Country.

What we could not verify

Camp Honey Creek does not publish camper ages, session lengths, cabin sizes, camper-to-counselor ratio, a phone policy or tuition on the pages we read.

None of that is a criticism — camps publish different things, and plenty of it is answered on a phone call. But do not take our table as a substitute for asking them directly, and be sceptical of any comparison page, including this one, that appears to know a competitor's numbers precisely.

How to decide

Ask your daughter first, and take the answer seriously. Girls who want single-sex camp usually know it, and girls who would find it stifling usually know that too. Parents are more often wrong about this than children are.

Once that is settled, the rest is the standard checklist: cabin ratio rather than property-wide ratio, phone policy in writing, what happens on a hard night in the middle of a session, and total cost including everything outside tuition.
