Mud Fight, Asia Jones Sing Song
Saturday was a very full day at Camp but much more laid back at the same time. Saturday afternoon we enjoyed the 1/2 mile hike down the Camp Road to the Carving Trees. Hike to the Carving Trees is probably on my personal top 3 events at Camp. As soon as I arrived I decided to take the Pinson Creek plunge, which means you go ahead and just immerse yourself in the creek and mud. Not only does it take the target off your back for a mud fight, but it’s also refreshingly cool and feels great. I also got a chance to enjoy ice-cold watermelon until my belly was full. I think what makes Hike to the Carving Trees so special is the simplicity and conversations had with Campers and Staff. Yesterday was just right.
Last evening we had the famous, famous, MOST FAMOUS Cookout, Storytelling, and Truckride/Wild Woman Hunt on the Front Yard. We ate hot dogs along with a new addition, corn on the cob! I got to share 4 stories last evening, including the Blue Wolf, Asia Jones, Jo Shields, and the Wild Woman. Peyton B. was Jo in our challenge re-enactment and Lane H. played the bully. Last night I shared a little known fact- that Jo Shield’s name is spelled without an “e”. Once it got dark we took a truck ride through the woods and some of our trailers did indeed spot the Wild Woman!!
We finished the evening with Sing Song at the pool. The crescent moon hung just over the tree line and the stars were shining bright and full. Listen to the full Sing Song set here.
Day of Rest
Once Sunday arrives, the day really revolves around stopping, reflecting, and resting. Our Sunday schedule is designed to do just this. This morning Campers slept in until 9am and then we all gathered at the Little Red Church for our mid-session church service. Little Red Church is a very peaceful time and is a great time for us to reflect on what really matters in life. We sang God is so Good and Father I Adore You. Our counselors (Nathan, Z & Hunter) led us in a few more worship songs, and then Pine Top sang Friends, which has been a long standing tradition at Huawni. Finally, younger campers and older campers broke into two groups at Riley led the younger kids outside and Christian led the older kids. Christian shared a personal story about climbing two fourteeners (mountains in Colorado that are above 14,000 ft.) and how he experienced an extreme amount of loneliness. He then tied that to how Jesus must have felt when he was on the cross alone, and ended with encouraging Camp to remember that Jesus’s sacrifice was the ultimate act of love.
This afternoon will be Choice, as Campers can choose to go on the Sunday Hike, go to the Critter Pond, or have a low key afternoon watching a movie in the Dining Hall. Tonight Camp will pick up a bit as we have Round 1 of the Huawni Wiffleball World Series. Caddo will look to bounce back with a win after Soccer, and the energy will officially being to pick up as we head into week two. Campers will also get to partake in one of the craziest night activities of Camp— shaving creme and water ballon fight.
