It’s raining at Camp and we are so very grateful! Yesterday in the late afternoon we got a big rain and it has really cooled off Camp! After all-day Tribal Competition yesterday, which is neck and neck, Campers enjoyed snow cones and slip-n-slide in the rain. It was perfect Camp weather.

Due to a rain delay yesterday, we pushed the Huawni Derby and Wiffleball World Series back to today. Tribal Competition is literally a dead heat, as Caddo and Tejas split events yesterday. So, today’s Huawni Derby was a big deal, as it very well may prove to be a deciding factor in the overall points for Session 3 Tribal Competition.

The Huawni Derby has been around for decades. It’s a 3 leg relay race, including a short run, long run, and width’s swim of the Critter Pond. The baton per se is an inner tube. Today’s Huawni Derby was as close as ever. Tejas took an early lead until about midway through, when Caddo came storming back thanks to Austin H.‘s come from behind swim. During the final 3 laps, Tejas took a slight lead and ended up pulling away to finish about 40 yards in front of Caddo. That said, there will still be one day of individual competition tomorrow (due to the rain and the 4th, we’ve had to extend individual competition through Thursday to make sure all campers get to compete for points). The golden pine cone will likely come down to individual points, which are still up for grabs.

Here’s a view of the Huawni Derby from the Critter Deck.

Caddo cheers for their tribe as the Huawni Derby nears the end.

The first leg of the Huawni Derby is the short run, where campers truck it from the Slide stairs to the corner of the Critter Pond.

Huawni 4th of July Celebration

4th of July at Camp Huawni is extra special. It started off today at Staff Meeting, as our directors and counselors arrived at staff meeting all duded up in red, white, and blue. Counselors gave some very creative sales pitches to be on our TNT Fireworks™ Huawni Fireworks Team. Getting selected for the TNT Fireworks™ Team is a big deal and very much a competitive feat. The Huawni 4th of July Playlist was in full effect, as campers woke up to Bruce Sprigsteen’s Born In the USA. Campers and staff are decked out today in their patriotic colors as everyone is looking forward to tonights Huawni 4th of July Celebration. We’re heading over to Huawni Pond for a hamburger cookout, face painting, photo booth, canoe races, and the famous, famous, MOST FAMOUS TNT Fireworks™ Show. I want to say a very BIG thank you to the Trout Family, who has once again donated fireworks for tonight’s 4th Celebration. Thank you so much!!
