Saturday was a full day at Camp and campers are definitely in the flow of Camp. Yesterday (Saturday) we had regular scheduled activities as campers competed at swim, archery, the OC, and hot shot for individual competition points. We dialed back the afternoon by taking a hike to the famous, famous, MOST FAMOUS Carving Trees! Campers hiked about 3/4 of the way down the Camp road, hung a right across from the Tyers place, and landed at the Carving Trees. Campers carved their names into the old beech trees that line the Pinson Creek, indulged in a Pinson Creek mud fight, and topped it off with ice-cold watermelon. Again, this is one of the more simple special events we do at Huawni but one in which campers love, love, LOVE! I love checking with campers on Hike to the Carving Trees. I saw two cousins who live in different towns laugh and carry on a conversation with watermelon in hand. I heard from two last-year camper how much he wants to be a CIT (counselor in training). And I watched a director (Billy) master the art of cutting watermelon. Rob Payne watch out!

The weekend at Huawni is a great opportunity for kids to have free play and rest and enjoy each other’s company. This continued as we hosted Cookout, Storytelling, a Truck Ride (Wild Woman Hunt), and Sing Song. I asked my father Mike to do the honors with storytelling last night and he accepted. So, our Session 3 campers had the pleasure of hearing from the man whom I learned to tell Huawni Stories. Dad told the Blue Wolf, Jo Shields, and Wild Woman stories. Then, as the moon began to creep over the horizon we took a truck ride through the pines looking for the wild woman. Towards the end of the ride we actually spotted her and she was way up in a tree! We ended the evening with a Sing Song by the pool as the stars were shining bright! I had a chance to point out the big dipper, little dipper, and north star last night due to how clear the sky was.

Sing Song

Last night we also had the honor of listening to one of our campers, Natalie S., sing a couple of tunes during Sing Song on her ukulele. So, without further ado, here is Saturday Night’s almost live Sing Song.

By the way, I know some of you have been listening to our recordings at work. If you have any special request, feel free to post your requests below. I can’t make any promises, but I will try and do my best!
