Smiles at little red church camp.jpg?ixlib=rails 2.1

The weekend is officially over, but the memories are anything but gone. Sunday at Camp is a day to slow down, focus on the main things in life, and enjoy the peace and quiet that Huawni has to offer. On Sunday, there are lots of those moments.

Yesterday morning campers slept in until 9am to get some extra rest!! After breakfast, everyone hopped on a trailer as we cruised over to the Little Red Church. Here’s a quick back story on the Little Red Church building and property. My great grandparents used to own a home and the land where the church now sits. Eventually that property was donated to the community co-op so that the church building and adjoining cemetery could remain there. This property truly is one of the most peaceful places around Camp, and when you get there you can feel it. At 10:15am yesterday morning Camp Huawni assembled here to be together and spend some time giving thanks and praise to our Heavenly Father and to reflect on what’s most important in life…namely to begin to answer the questions who am I and why am I here. Campers and staff got to join together to sing He’s Got the Whole World In His Hands and Father I Adore You. Christian shared with our older campers about loneliness and how God meets us there. Billy shared with our younger campers about how Jesus came down to earth to lift off of us that which was weighing us down (our sin). Even though we didn’t ask him to do that, he still did it because he loves us so much. Our hope every Sunday is to namely share the simple gospel….about how we are all broken and how God freely and unconditionally loves us no matter what.

Part of what makes Huawni special is the quality of young people we have on staff. Taylor and Anna are great examples of staff who live out who they are!

Billy (Men’s Staff Director) will be our first ever graduate of the Legacy Development Program, where he has spent the last 3 years diving into those big questions.

Sunday Choice

After rest period, campers got to unwind by picking their favorite afternoon activities, including Sunday Hike, Critter/Trolley/Slide, or movie in the Dining Hall. Sunday Hike took us over to Turtle Rock, where Campers jumped from this epic rock into the Pinson Creek. For more pics, check out our Instagram page. And of course, ice-cold watermelon (aka dinosaur eggs) were on hand to top it off!

Wiffleball World Series Round 1

After supper, Camp officially got dialed back up a notch as Caddo and Tejas faced off for the second big team event, the famous, famous, MOST FAMOUS Wiffleball World Series (WWS). Tejas was the victor in both games, shutting out Caddo in both games 4-0 and 2-0. Caddo will get another crack at Tejas in the WWS Round 2 on Tuesday evening.

Homesick Update

I am so encouraged to share that we only have a couple of homesick cases left this session that our counselors are diligently working through. I am so proud of our cabin counselors…in both situations they are going above and beyond to make these kids feel comfortable. We also have some HUGE successes with homesickness with a handful of campers….it’s so hard but once campers conquer it they hit a whole new level of independence and growth. For our families still enduring the back end of homesickness, have courage…we are working through every moment and seeing multiple small victories. Hopefully by Wednesday of the second week we’ll have these last two campers over the hump! I also want to reiterate that if at any point we feel like it’s best for campers to go home, we will be the first to communicate that to our parents. Otherwise, we are patiently guiding these kiddos as we go. Way to go, especially to our first-year families!!

If your camper is a first-time camper, what has been your experience as a parent at home this session?
