The final full day of Session 2 is upon us and campers wasted no time this morning in sharing what was on their hearts. After Breakfast (French Toast and Sausage!) we all walked down to the tennis courts where a freshly mown spot awaited us. The Summer Tree tradition started back in the 90’s and per usual, the Summer Tree Poem was read. After the poem, cabin by cabin, campers and staff expressed how much the last two weeks have meant to them.
The last few Summers we’ve started to write down memorable quotes from campers and staff. It’s hard to remember what’s said around the Summer Tree so we wanted to document and share a few with you:
“Thank you to all my cabinmates. I was a little nervous going into the summer with it being my first summer, but it was so much fun.” -Mary Elizabeth R.
“I want to shout out someone who doesn’t get enough appreciation… MS. ADA!!” -Peyton B.
“Pine Top, y’all are such great role models. And thank you to all of Camp Huawni for being such a great place to get away from all of the world’s distractions.” -Ruthie M.
“Thank you so much for these past two weeks. I’ve never met a group of guys who love each other & have fun together like y’all.” -Counselor, Chris B.
“I’ve had so much fun, these past two weeks have flown by. I’m not ready to say bye to y’all.” -Ainsley W.
One thing I’m consistently reminded of each Summer after listening to campers share at Summer Tree is, what Huawni is truly all about. As Directors, we’re always thinking of how Camp can be better. What can we do to make an activity more engaging or exciting? What new element can we add to Huawni Pond? While this type of thinking is great, I’m comforted in the fact that Campers love Huawni because of the people. I don’t think I’ve ever heard one Camper say at Summer Tree, “I love Camp because of the Ropes Course.” We only hear about PEOPLE because that’s what makes us so special. The relationships go way further than the Critter ever will (bold statement, I know).
Currently, all of Camp is down at the Critter Pond enjoying Critter Pond Mixer. Celebrating one last hurrah together before Initiation tonight. If you are planning on joining us for Initiation, please email our Director of Family Relations, Lauren McCrory at and check in at the front gate. Initiation starts promptly at 6:30pm – if you’re apart of the 8th fire, you may join us at 6pm in the Main Cabin for the 8th Fire Meeting.
We can’t wait to initiate all of our 1st year Campers tonight!
