The first day of our 55th summer here at Camp Huawni is complete! Day one’s recipe for success included cabin inspection, 6 different activity periods, rest period, and after supper free play time. The Critter Pond and High Ropes Course were just a couple of places where your children were having fun and facing some small fears. At this point, campers are still getting their feet wet and learning what it means to dive into all summer camp has to offer.
We believe that simple fun is the most fun. But what is that exactly? What does it look like, feel like, sound like, and taste like? Last night, it meant hiking over to Huawni Pond without any phones, quiet conversations with friends, laughter, and the taste of worms! The only selfies taken were the ones captured by the lasting memories of your children. It was simple fun…the best kind of fun. Did you know that we look at our phones on average 221 times per day? Instead of reaching to look at Insta likes, your kiddos were reaching for a cane pole.

Fishing introduces the deep tradition that’s rooted at Huawni. Dominick C. in Band Aid actually caught the first fish of the night! Fishing is laid back but allows all of Camp to connect on an individual level and really pushes people to come out of their shells. Worm eating, Fish kissing and marshmallow consuming are a sure bet. The cherry on top is when Chubby Bunny and Sing Song wrap up the night. This time cheering on their counselors and singing together create a special bond, and it happened last night!
Fishing with a Cane Pole isn’t “special” by any means. It’s not about that- it’s about the conversations and friendships that form in the midst of catching a fish with your cabin mate or counselor. We grasp on tightly to simplicity here at Huawni. Some of my favorite moments as a summer camper and a counselor occurred at Fishing. We believe that a good s’more, your best friends, and a really nice sunset over Huawni Pond are all you need to make the first full day at Camp the best one ever.
What do you (or your camper) love most about Fishing?? (post below)
