How Valuable is Summer Camp?

We all miss certain things about Camp throughout the year – maybe it’s the Critter, our friends, or Fishing on a Tuesday Night. For me, it’s the middle of October and all I can think about is Miss Ada’s cooking! I cannot wait to get back to the piney woods and eat my weight in chocolate chip cookies. But what about the other aspects of Camp that brings us back each summer, but we do not really think about? Things like the lessons learned, skills gained?

Since Camp Huawni is one of the top rated camps in Texas, we know that there are multiple Camp families who would vouch for the unforgettable experience and beloved memories of summer camp. But it can be difficult to put into words and answer the question “just how valuable is Summer camp?”

Here are 5 reasons why we think Summer camp for kids is so important:

#1 Campers gain new skills.

Campers spend the session gaining independence and learning responsibility by doing things for themselves, and learning how to interact with people they met a short while ago. They leave Camp having not only built lasting friendships, but also having learned social skills, leadership, and even independence and responsibility!

#2 Campers try new things.

Whether it be jumping off the Critter or being at sleep away camp and away from family for the first time, Camp is a place that gets kids out of their comfort zone. Campers have a whole cabin on their side, rooting for them every step of the way. They walk away with more courage, confidence, and a sense of accomplishment!

We put our campers in situations that require learning new skills and gaining independence; like learning how to knock their own arrow at Archery!

#3 Campers feel like they are a part of something.

Camp gives kids something to look forward to all year, and provides them with a place they know they belong. With the rich tradition that Camp Huawni provides, it is a home away from home. We want campers to leave each summer knowing that they are always welcome with their Huawni family!

#4 Camp is a place to let loose, and have fun!

At Camp, we operate in an outdoor environment that facilitates unstructured play where kids get to be kids. Being unplugged allows them to connect on a deeper level with those around them and engage in ways that technology can hinder in the typical day to day. Campers get to truly experience Camp and the joy that pairs with simple fun, and they leave with ample memories that will last a lifetime!

#5 Camp gives kids the freedom to be themselves.

Camp is where kids can be their unique selves without feeling the pressure to be someone they are not. We believe an environment such as this is where the discovery of true significance and purpose begins, and we are so thankful we get to see this first hand, summer after summer.
